Proper nutrition plays a vital role in a baby’s development. Our kitchen staff pride themselves in preparing balanced and nutritious homemade meals using only fresh ingredients. The use of salt and sugar is kept to a minimum.
Sensory play is any activity that stimulates children's senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Stimulating the senses helps children develop thinking, language, social-emotional, and physical skills. This may sometimes involve messy play – when substances such as paint/sand/jelly is being used, we always ensure that it is safe to consume – after all, babies put everything in their mouths!
Our teachers plan activities that will encourage and support the development of fine-and gross motor skills which in turn will support each baby in reaching their milestones (sitting up, crawling, reaching, pincer grip, walking etc.)
Teachers will talk babies through all daily activities, even while nappy changing. Lots of songs will be sung and stories form part of every day.
Each baby has their own labelled cot. A changing routine is in place and babies get changed on their own changing blanket.
Babies develop the most while they are sleeping, that is why they sleep so often! Our teachers follow a sleeping schedule and create a sleeping atmosphere to ensure that all babies get the right amount of daily naps. We aim for the optimum sleeping time for baby’s age:
Age | Maximum Awake Time Between Naps | Number Of Naps At School |
3 – 4 months | 1 – 1.5 hours | Half day (2) Full day (4) |
5 months | 1.5-2 hours | Half day (2) Full day (4) |
6 months | 2 hours | Half day (2) Full day (4) |
7 months | 2 – 2.5 hours | Half day (2) Full day (3) |
8 months | 2 – 2.5 hours | Half day (2) Full day (3) |
9 months | 2 – 2.5 hours | Half day (2) Full day (3) |
10 months | 2.5- 3 hours | Half day (1) Full day (2) |
11 months | 2.5 – 3 hours | Half day (1) Full day (2) |
12 months | 3 – 4 hours | Half day (1) Full day (2) |
13 – 18 months | 4 – 5 hours | Half day (1) Full day (2) |
18 months – 6 years | 5 – 6 hours | Half day (0) Full day (1) |
We also take into account that each baby is unique and even though we aim for optimum sleep opportunities, we will be guided by what the baby’s individual needs are.
Music Minds offers age-appropriate and culturally relevant songs, illustrations and activities. The program uses the proven channel of music to develop a child’s visual and motor skills, their listening and speaking skills and their language and tactile development.
Below is the form that will be sent home daily giving you information about your child’s day with the focus on feeding, naps and number of nappies.

The difference of physical and mental development between months in the first three years of a child’s life is much bigger than in the years thereafter. That is why we do not group children according to their birth year and “promote” them to a next class the next year, but instead our babies and toddlers are grouped according to months old so we can better focus on their specific needs for their specific age. This means that they may progress to the next class any time during the year that may be appropriate for them.
